The Inherited Life Audit

A guided way to notice what shaped you, decide what still fits, and design one small experiment toward a life that feels more deliberately yours.

Before you begin

Examine your life without putting it on trial.

The goal is not to prove that your current life is wrong or that everything inherited must be replaced. It is to notice the difference between familiarity and fit. Your entries stay on this device. You can print the completed audit or clear it whenever you want.

Step 01

Name the current draft

Describe the life you are actually living—not the version you present to other people or the one you expect to have eventually.

Step 02

Trace what shaped it

Select the forces that meaningfully influenced your present choices. Influence is not the same as blame.

Step 03

Decide what still fits

Do not ask whether something came from other people. Almost everything did. Ask whether you would choose it again with your current awareness.

Step 04

Count the cost of changing—and staying

We naturally calculate the cost of changing. Give the cost of remaining unchanged equal attention.

Step 05

Design an experiment, not an escape

Choose a reversible step that gives you new evidence. The point is not to prove that you are brave. It is to learn something your current environment cannot teach you.

Tool 02

Build one attention boundary

A boundary works best when it removes a repeated decision. Identify one recurring distraction, make your intended action easier, and make the automatic distraction harder to reach.

The three-part boundary

  • Notice: “I lose twenty minutes when I open my phone in bed.”
  • Change the environment: Charge it outside the bedroom.
  • Provide an alternative: Use an alarm clock and leave a book nearby.

Start with one boundary

Do not redesign your digital life tonight. Choose one boundary that protects something specific.

  • No feeds before breakfast.
  • Notifications only from people.
  • Phone out of reach during one conversation.
  • Decide why you are opening an app before you open it.
